Marketing & Commercial Development Specialist

An expert Sports Marketing, Management and Commercial Executive, John Murphy relocated to New York in April 2019 to lead the development of Momentum’s sports consulting practice. Drawing on his wealth of international sports experience, John provides marketing and commercial development solutions for Australian companies looking to reach into the US market, and US companies wanting an Australian presence.

Prior to joining Momentum, he was the Commercial Director of Motorsport Australia, formerly the Confederation of Australian Motor Sport (CAMS), the governing body for four-wheeled motor sport in Australia.  He oversaw all commercial operations, membership, sport development, media/communications, and IT for Motorsport Australia and its associated properties.

John’s work in improving membership service, systems and communication resulted six years of consecutive record growth in membership and revenue. He also played a key role in developing programs to foster growth in club level, junior and grassroots motorsport.

During his tenure, John also significantly expanded the commercial activities of Motorsport Australia, developing a suite of corporate partners, and generating new and significant non-core revenue streams to reinvest into the sport. 

John is a Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) Development Task Force Expert, a member of the FIA’s Digital Motor Sport Working Group, and has developed and delivered training and consultancy programs to national motor sport bodies across Asia, Africa and South America.

From 2006 – 2013 John worked in Media, PR, Fan Development and Marketing at the North Melbourne Football Club (AFL). 

As General Manager – Marketing and Fan Development, John was the senior manager responsible for supporter growth, marketing, events, ticket sales and match day activations during a period of record membership, crowd and revenue growth for the NMFC. 

John holds a Bachelor of Business (Marketing) from Monash University and an Executive MBA from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology.

He is a member of the Ashburton Willows Cricket Club, the New York Road Runners and the North Melbourne Football Club.

Communications Adviser

An award-winning journalist and news presenter for all media platforms:
television, print, online, and radio; an experienced Chief of Staff and metro news producer; an international correspondent for multiple agencies across the Asia Pacific Region; and a published non-fiction and fiction author.

Katherine is a journalist with over a decade of experience, and has worked across every medium – print, online, television and radio – at some of the Australia’s biggest outlets.

Katherine began her career at the Herald Sun newspaper (News Corp), where she specialised in sports reporting (winning an AFL Media award in 2008), before moving to breaking news, including crime and court reporting. During this time, she covered some of the state’s most notorious criminal affairs, including the death and funeral of underworld figure Carl Williams.

She has also worked for Seven West Media (7 News, 7 Sport), 3AW Radio, and the Nine Network, and has been a regular international correspondent for multiple global outlets. 

Katherine was also the Head Media Liaison Officer for the 2018 Australian Winter Olympic Team 2018 in Pyeong Chang, Korea, responsible for all media operations for Ice Sports Athletes. This included setting up and facilitating interviews and press activities, writing online articles, promoting athletes, and logistical management.

Katherine has been writing fiction from a young age, and she studied literature and journalism at university, as part of her Arts degree.

Her debut novel has been inspired by the many criminal trials she has covered and is due for release by Penguin Random House in 2020.

She provides strategic communications, media and content strategy for Momentum and its partners.
